Maybe Donald Trump should appoint himself attorney general.
During a quick press gaggle on the South Lawn of the White House on Friday morning, Trump was asked if he would fire Jeff Sessions if the current AG does not free up more resources to go after Hillary Clinton, who apparently still takes up so much space in the president’s head she and her husband might as well make it part of their Chappaqua compound.
“I don’t know. I’m really not involved with the Justice Department. I’d like to let it run itself. But honestly, they should be looking at the Democrats. They should be looking at Podesta and all of that dishonesty. They should be looking at a lot of things. And a lot of people are disappointed in the Justice Department, including me.”
These latest comments follow Trump recently lamenting his inability to turn the FBI and the Justice Department loose on his political enemies, which he said he would “love” to be doing.
The president is being constrained by our democracy from unleashing the DOJ on political opponents he already defeated in an election. And it’s killing him to not be able to exercise those authoritarian impulses.
The question facing all of us now is whether he will lash out in frustration with something other than angry tweets. And if he does, just what that explosion will look like.
